TPLO Surgery for Cruciate Rupture Stabilisation
Injuries to the cruciate ligament within the the stifle joint (the knee of the hind leg), are unfortunately common in dogs.
These injuries may arise from a breed predisposition, neutering at a young age (select breeds), a highly active lifestyle or result from gradual wear and tear in heavier dogs. Regardless of the cause, the instability of the joint can leads to permanent lameness, cartilage damage and the onset of arthritis, resulting in chronic pain and permanent weakness.
The TPLO (Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy) is the Rolls Royce of the many surgical techniques developed to stabilise the stifle. It has proven time and time again to provide the greatest return to function over other surgical options. The TPLO involves a plating technique to reposition the top of the tibia, changing the angle of weight bearing through the limb. The ‘forward slipping’ motion of the tibia caused by the torn ligament is resolved.
