Omokoroa Pet Vets Prescription Policy

Ever been curious about how clinics come up with their rules for repeat prescriptions for veterinary medicines?

Here's the scoop: Just like with our own doctors, veterinarians have legal requirements they must follow before issuing repeat prescriptions, set by the veterinary council, not the clinics.

If interested in the Vet Council laws, take a peek at this link:

Vet clinics can be audited, and vets might face investigations for not adhering to these laws. So, please bear with us if we can't provide medications beyond these limits.

Repeat Prescription Requirements:

·        If your pet has a chronic disease and needs to be on continued medical treatment, we must physically see the patient for a recheck every 6 months to continue prescribing for another 6 months.

·        For most medications (excluding controlled drugs) the maximum quantity allowed for collection at one time is 3 months supply. A 3 month repeat prescription will be provided until the next recheck is due. To take the sting off these appointments they are at reduced fees. Any further testing (blood tests etc) is optional but may be discussed if there has been a change in your pet’s health in the last 6 months.

·        Controlled drugs are the exception, where a maximum of one month supply at one time applies.

·        And did you know? To wisely use antibiotics and fight resistance in both humans and animals, repeat prescriptions for antibiotics aren't a thing. We need to know exactly what type of infection we are treating to select the correct antibiotic every time. If an alternative to antibiotics will be effective, this will be used first.

Please also note:

food, flea treatment, consultations and repeat prescriptions need to be paid in full at the time. Unfortunately, as a small privately owned business we cannot run credit accounts for these purchases. We reserve credit agreements and payment plans for emergencies and must be approved by Nick and Raewyn.

If your pet needs continued medication, a range of treatments to suit your pets’ needs will be offered. We cannot offer payment plans on treatments outside your budget. As an alternative, Afterpay or insurance plans may be helpful in this situation.
