Reproduction Services

Omokoroa Pet Vets Team members have developed their knowledge, experience and skills to offer a range of reproductive services.

These include:

  • Screening for the health of breeding animals to ensure offspring don’t suffer inherited diseases:

    • Penn Hip to screen for hip dysplasia

    • Elbow X-rays assessed in NZ or Australia to screen for elbow dysplasia

    • Echocardiogram to screen for inherited heart diseases

    • Screening of kidneys for Polycystic kidney disease

    • Palpation of joints to certify no obvious abnormalities are present

    • Brachycephalic screening - assessing airflow obstruction

    • DNA testing

  • Supporting pregnancy

    • Inhouse and external progesterone testing offered

    • Artificial Insemination - fresh collection of canine semen and infusion into a catheterised bitch

    • Pregnancy ultrasound as early as 18 days - with an estimation of foetal numbers

    • Option of X-Ray late pregnancy to determine foetal numbers

    • Reverse Progesterone - to aid in deterimining the timing of natural whelp as his can be useful if the whelp seems to be later than expected.

    • Foetal Heart Rates: - are assessed by ultrasound to determine if foeti are in distress and a c section needs to be performed

  • Whelping Support

    • For breeders registered to Omokoroa Pet Vets whom we have been a part of the journey through timing of matings, pregnancy diagnosis to timing of whelp, we offer whelping support. In select cases, this may include outside of working hours as our team is dedicated to ensure the journey we have been on with breeders provides the most successful outcome.

Whelping support may be as simple as a sounding board whilst whelping is occurring, to examining the bitch or queen in the clinic or oxytocin if the whelp has slowed or is weak, to the last resort - a c section if needed.
